Day 2 of Filming

Day 2 of Filming

Day 2 of filming was done on the 28 of January 2015. We made our way to the park opposite college.
We filmed the scene where Amy is going to meet Jess to hear about what is happening. During the conversation it is clear that Amy is not bothered about what is happening.

We then made our way to the regents canal where we beagn filming our chase scenes between Jess and the stalker. We did many retakes at differnt shots to establish what was happening and during our editing precess we have many shots to pick from.

Since it was heavily raining we were worried about the equipment and  we were not able to do all the shots that we planned to do. We made our way back to college and decide to film the scene where the stalker has many pictures of teenage girls infront of him to highlight his obsession and then we had him circle the picture of Summer who is playing the role of Jess.
We filmed in a dark room with all the lights off and we had one light coming form the camera which created thriller mood.

Day 1 of filming

Day 1 of filming

Filming our title sequence 'watched' began on the 26th of January 2015.

We started filming at Summers house. We began filming our last scene where the main character Jess wakes up and is in her bedroom.
We also filmed the scene where she spots the stalker walking outside her house. She doesnt think much of it and carries on with her usual business. She gets ready for college and we film her leaving the house.

After that we filmed Jess coming back from college and she notices someone
following her so she rushes into her house and drops her keys because she is
overwhelmed by fear.

The final scene we filmed on Day 1 was the scene where Jess texts her freind Amy about being followed. Her friend Amy takes no notice of the text as she thinks it is not a big deal.

Camera shots used on Day 1

  • Match cuts
  • Close ups
  • Wide shot to establish the surroundings

Common social groups in High School dramas:

·         Jocks

·         Nerds

·         Emos

·         Cheerleaders

·         Loners

·         Bimbos

·         Musicians/ artists

Stereotypes show the audience how the world views that person. High school dramas usually support stereotypes and youth dramas challenge stereotypes.

Jocks are seen as very muscular boys who play sports and don’t care about their education. They are also players and usually date the cheerleaders.

Nerds are the boys/girls that usually wear glasses and braces and really care about their education. They get picked on by the jocks.

Emos are the teenagers who wear all black and sit in the back of the classroom listening to music and drawing in their scrapbooks.

Cheerleaders are the top of the school food chain. They are the most popular and beautiful girls. The girls want to be them and the boys want to date them.

Loners are the boys/girls who enjoy their own company. They are very antisocial and avoid going to high school social events such as prom or football games.

Easy A- Analysis

Camera

There are many different camera shots in the opening title sequence. There is a tilted camera shot and this sets the scene as it shows us the high school that this movie is set in. There are many close up shots used when introducing the characters. This allows us to have a good look at the characters. There also some long shots and bird eye view shots; these set the scene and allow us to see the location of the movie.
Sound

The main sound during the opening title sequence is the voice over which the voice of the main actress Emma Stone. As she is the narrator we can tell that this story and we will be hearing her side. The continuous up beat music playing through out the opening gives creates a very happy mood.
Mise-en-scene

The clothing of the characters
allows us to see what age these
characters are. They are dressed very
Casually this gives us an idea about them being in high school. With their clothes it allows us to put them into stereotypically social groups. Like the nerds or the mean girls. The props used are mobile phones and text books. These are typical props for teenagers in high school.
Editing

The editing in the opening of this movie is not too complex because it is not an action or horror movie. The ‘A’ is red which makes it stand out more and allows the audience to remember it.

Sub genres of teen drama fims

There are two categories with in teen dramas and they are:

High school and Youth Drama.

High School Drama: Got very popular from the 70's right to the 90's however, it is very popular still now and I would say more popular now than it was before because of the new technology. For example: streaming, Netflix , sky, ect. people are able access films more now. There were many variations within the genre itself. They tend to focus on changes, makeover and conflicts within groups at school. The teens and young adults often socialize in institutions such as School, home and college. High school dramas often have a main character of a girl with a boy she likes.

Here are a few examples of popular high school dramas:

As you can see there is a mixture of boys and girls but there always a girl that will be the main character.

Youth Drama: Often bad teenagers who like to cause trouble and are often in a gang. The main character often tends to a rebellious, naughty boy and has conflict with other people , they tend to think they are better than anyone else and think they have all power over others. The focus is mainly on the trouble the main character faces and the difficulties of the adolescent experience with the protagonist often being the male. Most youth dramas seem to be a more authentic representation than high school dramas. Also tend to be part of gangs who tend to bully others who doesn't stand up to there standards. When you also think of youth dramas you think of violence and there is a lot of violence in youth dramas.

Here are a few examples of popular youth dramas:

As you can see youth dramas are different to high school because the main characters in this case are men/boys. The style is also much darker than high school because high school front covers are more bright.

Analysing A high school drama - Easy A

Easy A
Camera:

This is a story title sequence as it goes straight into the film and begins by having a shot of the clear recognisable bright sky then the camera then tilts downwards where you see a street sign saying -"Ojei North High School, a California Distinguished School". , by the camera doing this you straight away know where the film is located and that the film is a 'High school Drama'. There are then a lot of people close up shots which introduces the character which will be in the film. , The camera then changes by tilting downwards showing the school and the playground and also a tree, once you see the tree the camera goes to a close up of a pair of school shoes hanging from the tree which indicates that the school could be filed with rebellious students. The camera then follows all the students whilst credits and character names will appear. By the camera following certain students you are able to notice the different type of social groups, this is also an example of how high schools are stereotyped.
Right at the end of the title sequence the camera does a medium close up of a girl , which suggests that she could be the main character, as this is happening her name appears 'Emma Stones'.
The Medium close up of the main character in the title sequence.

 Sound:

As the title sequence starts there is a lot of sound but the first thing you hear and realise is that there is a voice over. Everyone talked in an American accent which shows that it is an American film and was filmed in America, or California.. There was synchronous streaming music through the start of the title sequence where the students walk and converse with their friends. There is also a few non-digetic sounds which will be the school chimes because you could hear them in the background but you obviously can't see them. The voice over that you heard at the start of the sequence reveals her identity as the main character comes in the voice over stops and you can see the person talking. In the background you can hear dialogue and conversations which tells that it is a very busy school and a lot is going on.

 Mise-en-scene:

the dress code in this sequence if you see a group of boys wearing soccer clothes which shows that they could be part of a football team and the main character is dressed very casual which tells us that she could be very quiet and shy because her best friend is then wearing a opened bloused top which shows a lot of cleavage, so her personality could be quite out forward. These characterizes a person in a secondary school. The non-verbal communication additionally aides characterize a character on the grounds that the primary character's friend had her involved her hips which demonstrates that she's bossy, yet the principle character remained up straight with a few papers in her grasp. The props you can see are work books , cigarettes , mobile phones. This shows that they are very into social media and interact through their phones. The workbook obviously tells us they are in a school.

Editing:

The editing is very good and clear because the credits where done very well as every time a new character was introduced there name would appear on the screen. Another clear edit is with the name 'easy a' , is has been edited to be red and the 'A' is in different font to the rest of it.

Who makes title sequences

Title sequences contribute both information and atmosphere to a video. When properly executed, a stylish title sequence adds an immediate air of professionalism.

One famous example of the form is the work of Saul Bass in the 1950s and 60s. His modish title sequences for the films of Alfred Hitchcock were key in setting the style and mood of the movie even before the action began, and contributed to Hitchcock's "house style" that was a key element in his approach to marketing.

Another well known designer is Maurice Binder, who designed the often erotic titles for many of the James Bond films from the 1960s to the 1980s. After his death, Daniel Kleinman has done several of the titles.

This is a famous title design from James Bond which was designed from Maurice Binder.

This is another Title design from the very famous 'skyfall' , again obviously designed by Marice Binder. Skyfall was the biggest selling sales in the cinemas when it was first released.

Catogorizing Title sequences

Teen dramas - Title sequences - Research into institution

In these pictures you can see three different films and how differently there credits might be.
The three films are 'My brother the devil' , 'Beautiful thing' , 'Mean girls'.
The first two are 'youth dramas' and means girls is a high school drama, from the information I have gathered you can clearly see that mean girls has a lot more credits than the others. However, they all start pretty similar because they all start if with the company productions even though they have different productions.
Then the credits go on to introducing the characters and the distributions , The high school drama may be longer as they usually have a lot more characters than youth dramas
