Rough cut of Watched

This is our rough copy of our title sequence which we still need to add sound and make the sequence longer as it is too short. We also need to sort out the jump between the production company and the name of our film as this is an error that needs to be fixed. We are now currently working on the soundtrack using garage band to be added to the title sequence.

Sub-genre conventions

Easy A:
This is a very complex title sequence which includes a lot through the use of camera, editing , mise-en-scene and sound.

Mise-en-scene: The mise-en-scene is the main part of the title which shows us the different locations/settings and the characters that are going to be involved in the film. The fact that at the start of the title sequence shows us blue skies which then moves down to a flag of USA , straight away tells us its in a hot place in America. Which is then moved on to a sign saying 'Ojai' ( the town of where the film is taking place). Further on into the title there is a shot of a school name, therefore giving us further information of the main location which is clearly a High School. The fact that there is bright lighting throughout the whole title sequence indicates that it may have taken place in the summer due to the images of the trees, oranges etc.  We then get an establishing shot of the playground showing the different kinds of stereotypical groups of teenagers (e.g. popular girls, nerds etc). This gives the audience an idea of the main plot of the film through the use of the locations, settings. characters and the different things discovered through the images for example the shoes hanging on the tree.

Sound: The sound is also a very important technique as it sets the tone of the title sequence. Therefore through the use of having an up beat song playing at the beginning allows the audience to get a positive view point on the film and therefore intrigue them to want to watch more and creating a good atmosphere. The fact that the bell rings while the synchronous music is playing tells the audience that the start of the film is about to begin. There is then a non diegetic voice over of a girl speaking explaining the main plot of the story making the audience interested and listening to what she has to say.

Editing: There is a lot of editing that has taken place in this title sequence through the use of lots of different techniques. At the beginning there is a jump cut from the setting of the film to a sign showing us where the film is being taken place. Furthermore, the name of the film is also edited into the title through photoshop as it is noticed on a shot of shoes hanging from a tree to show the start of the film. Another editing technique is when there is a narrative voice over explaining the plot of the main character which is taken place while the title credits and setting are still being shown to the audience.

Camera;  There are a variety of different camera shots in this sequence such as close ups, titling down movement, tracking and much more. At the beginning of the sequence the camera tilts down to the production company name so that it is the main focus of the screen to intrigue the target audience and making them well aware of the production company. Furthermore, there is an establishing shot of a orange garden which is then jump cutted to a close up of on orange this may be to emphasize the setting as it may be a main part of the film. There is also a lot of tracking from when the school bell rings of the different students rushing around to the classes which then focuses on to the main character by tracking lots of different students then stopping on her.

Analyse two title sequences

Spring Breakers:

This title sequence is very plain but very effective as it is on a blank black screen not inferring any clips of the movie. This therefore limits the target audience information on what the film is going to include but due to the fact that they have used letters that are customised to look like different objects in the film which can intrigue the audience. Furthermore the fact that the colours used to emphasise the text allow us to know that the target audience is aimed at young teenager girls which also contrast with the upbeat music being played while the titles are being shown.

This title sequence is very short due to the fact that it is a mainstream production as it does not include all of the actors at the beginning which is different to many other titles. It is also apparent that it is a animated title sequence as the font would have been edited to look an exact way to intrigue the audience and make it interesting.

Coraline:

This title sequence is very different in contrast to spring breakers as it starts to tell the story of the doll Coraline therefore giving away the main story line plot. This is a narrative title sequence due to this fact and is clearly not an stylized title sequence as it does not include current editing software techniques. Furthermore, it is a very interesting title sequence which includes a lot allowing the audience to be intrigued by all the information portrayed through the doll being created. While this is being done this is when the different titles are shown of the producers/ editors etc, which is an effective way to do it as it is not to distracting from the main focus of the  title sequence.

It is also a much longer title sequence then the first one I have analyzed as it is a narrative title it therefore has more to include and more to show about the film, the fact that it is a childrens films as well is that fact that they have to explain what is going on in the film so that they do not get bored of it.

Missing poster

We have created this missing poster with all the information about our character 'Jess'. We plan to have this at the end of our title sequence which then prompts the rest of the movie where Jess is being found with flashbacks of what happened to her.

Also as you know at the beginning our title sequence was influenced by the film 'Taken' , therefore , the colour scheme that we have used is red and black because of the film 'Taken'. We find that the colours are very catchy and could give a clue to the audience that the title sequence is a 'thriller' because if the red symbolizing blood and black symbolizes dark and scary atmosphere.

As you can the red font of the name stands out the most and draws you in straight away, and thats what we are trying to do with our title sequence. Eventhough we are doing a descreet title sequence and taken is not one parts of that film we have used to help make ours such as the colour , font and layout.

My feedback - 2

28 posts

you have some very strong work on your blog Beau but there is work missing that is preventing you from attaining a mark into level 3, which is more reflective of your potential.  Please reflect on the feedback below and complete the to do list at the bottom.

Strengths:
Some good detail in the posts
Visually nicely organised and presented

Less strong:
•             Frequency of posting to the blog – only 1 post between 10/01 and 03/02
•             Lots of planning posts are missing e.g. no storyboard, pitch, production schedule etc… without evidence of these things your mark cannot go into level 3 (C+ and B)
•             Taken isn’t a teen drama so you need to record / discuss some teen drama influences too

To do:
1.            Improve your frequency of posting to the blog
2.            Post up all your planning blogs that are missing
3.            Begin to use a greater range of ICT
4.            Improve your posting to the blog during the filming and editing stages
5.            Post up the research into other influence films and sequences as well as taken that are from the teen drama genre

What we did today

  • We shot the last scenes of our title sequence.
  • We began editing our rough cut.
  • We got feedback from a student about our rough cut.
  • We started to watch title sequences fro past students and Homeland which influenced us to change our title sequence to discretive - we have decided to change our sequence to this because we don't want to give to much away to the audience we want to keep them wondering whats gonna happen in the film.

Change of display and Layout of blog.

This is how our blog was originally designed before we decided on the type of genre, it was plain and had no theme to therefore coming across as very simple. The fact that the background was very plain and the writing didn't really stand out not making it seem like a Thriller title sequence.

I then edited the blog through using a different type of layout and creating a dark atmosphere to portray the mysterious theme, by changing the colours of the text and the colour of the background. This links to our title sequence ' Watched' as it is very mysterious and the fact it is a thriller themed sequence displays the  genre through the use of colours.

Reflecting on our current sequence and some changes we would like to make

As a group we have created a rough draft which is going to be posted shortly and from viewing it, we have discussed that a narrative title sequence is not very effective for our storyline. Therefore we viewed a few of our friends ideas that study media at A2 and have previously created title sequences and trailers in different colleges. This influenced our ideas as we then decide that it would be better to create a discrete title sequence as it will link to our mysterious storyline. Due to this, we then showed our teacher our current rough draft which she then gave feedback that it was effective and there is slight improvements that need to be made. This is when we discussed the idea of changing it to a discrete title sequence, in which she showed us the opening title of Arlington Road giving us  a immediate idea of how we would like to present our title sequence.

As an effect of watching Arlington Road title sequence ( which is embedded into the blog) this has given us many ideas that we are going to include in our title sequence, which is currently now being re-drafted. Therefore as result of changing our type of title sequence we hope that it will create a more effective and interesting look which will intrigue our target audience.

Furthermore, the fact that is it a Thriller genre it links to the idea of it being a discrete title sequence as we  don't want to give away too much of the storyline as we want it to be mysterious. Which will then make our audience to want to continue watching and be interested in our film.

Student Feedback from rough cut

We asked a fellow student to watch our rough cut of our title sequence. We asked her what was good, what was bad and what we should change. Since this is a teen drama, the feedback we got from Shayma helped us to change our title sequence to improve it

photos of filming sessions

This is our twitter account that we have made to keep in contact with our college, This was evidence to prove where we was and that we was filming.
We took this picture to show the location of where a bouts we was filming and this picture is down regents canal.
The canal was where we filmed the main character 'jess' getting chased by the stalker.
This was on the 19th of January.

Just another tweet to prove we are filming.

This was on the 4th of february where we filmed the main characters normal day at college. This picture shows that stalker watching Her as she was entering college.

More title sequence work

This is some of the work we did on the categorization of title sequences which therefore allowed us to then explore the different types of title sequences available. Which then eventually lead to us choosing what type of title sequence we were going to do.

Forms of distribution

We have been through all of our footage , which we have put together using Final Cut Pro and which will in the future be edited and titles will be added into it as-well.  Therefore we are going to start marketing our title sequence to persuade and allow people to have an idea of what our title sequence is going to be about and what it involves.

We are going to create a twitter account as it is one of the main social networking sites that young teenagers use , therefore allowing us to reach our target audience and promote our title sequence.

The reason for us using a twitter page is because it is free form of advertising and is the best way as when we was researching we found that social networking is the mainly used by teens which is what we are looking to attract.

We have also decided that we are going to create a facebook page as it is the most popular social networking sites which provides both our target audience and secondary target audience.

It is also a good idea for us to create this page as we can keep people updated about when we are going to be posting our rough draft on to this page and we can then see how many people will like and share our title sequence draft.

Blogging feedback

1st blogging feedback:

This was my first feedback i received which I then started to post more blogs as I was behind, this shall therefore allow my grade to go up and will let me know how I can improve the quality of my posts.

Production Schedule

This is our planned production schedule we showed during our presentation which allows us to work around the days that we can film all together as a group which then allows us to have enough time to edit our title sequence.

We are currently nearly finished our filming and we are going to start editing as today (2nd February 2015).

We feel that we have given our self a lot of time to feel and therefore have more footage than we need so that we have a choice of the different clips/shots we want to utilise in the title sequence.
