Youth Drama and High School Drama, these both include different conventions to allow them to become two sub-genres as they focus on different aspects of teenage communications.
High school drama; These usually include changes/conflict with different groups in school as focus on the socialization of teens and young adults through institutions such as schools, colleges etc. Grease is an example of a High school drama as it includes a variety of different groups in school such as the Pink Ladys and T-birds. It is also girl centred as Sandy is the main focus of the film which most High school dramas usually do focus on girls but sometimes a male lead. Towards the end of the film they celebrate the idea of being young through having a leaving school fair this once again includes the typical convention of a High school drama film.
Youth drama: These usually focus on youth being a difficult problem and the difficulties adolescent experience. They focus on the dilemmas faced by the main character in the film which is often male. Kidulthood is a prime example as it focuses on Jay and the troubles he has to face in his neighbourhood, he is also a rebellious character which is another aspect of Youth drama films as the main character is usually rebellious. Also Jay has conflict with various people on his estate the main one being Sam, this is another example of the conventions used in Youth drama. As they usually include conflict with the main character and someone else to once again emphasises the experiences teenagers may come across outside of institutions.
